Here are the handful of things you should know before you buy a Vitamix.
Donโt worry about new tech. โIโm concerned about the touch controls and digital timer.โ I hear that. Several years into making Ascent models, the tech has held up: Touch controls, digital timers, responsive programs, et al are demonstrably durable. And youโre covered by a multi-year warranty that less than 2% of customers ever need. But if you want none of it (mechanical controls only), there are good options. No reason to force yourself into a situation that makes you uncomfortable.
Donโt get stuck on a few bad reviews. โI saw reviews about getting error codes and non-responsive containers.โ Totally. Many of these situations are caused by making common beginner mistakes like not using the tamper or doing super thick blends on anything less than Variable speed 10. Still, you get 60-day returns plus up to a decade of warranty service which include return shipping if you happen to get unlucky. What you’re experiencing is resistance to buying something that’s not easy to buy. But your only regret will be waiting so long.
Donโt think you need a second container. A secondar may be helpful for:
If you are doing any of those listed above today, then yes, you should get another container. But, if youโre not doing these today, you should hold off. A minimalist approach is best, and if you decide you need another container, you can always get one.
Donโt misunderstand the programs (automated blending). โWhat happens if I want to make something that itโs not programmed for?โ All Vitamix blenders have Variable Speed controls (even if they also have recipe programs). So you can use the dial to control the variable speeds just like you would on a blender without programs.
Donโt place too much weight on noise. โHow much louder is this one than that one?โ A few models are among the least loud. Others are among the loudest. None are quiet. Find a level of noise output youโre comfortable with and move on. We use protective headphones for hard-ingredient, tamper-dependent blends (nut butter, ice cream, etc) even with the least-loud model.
Donโt overbuy accessories. โI feel like I need a Food Processor Attachment and the Dry Grains Container?โ Bundling is a great way to save. But we find that most people are most successful with the least amount of stuff. Cash is king and minimalism is queen.
Donโt read into the power. โDoes a 2.2 HP Vitamix blend better?โ Horsepower listed on Vitamix blenders may vary. And that may be due to differences in build design affecting output. But a machine with 2.2HP blends equally well as one with 2.0HP.
Donโt overdo underbuying. โI found one at Goodwill. Good deal?โ There’s something to be said about keeping products out of landfills. And there’s something to be said about saving a few hundred dollars. But if you already have a smoothie making practice, you’re going to get so much value out of whatever Vitamix you buy. Let it sting once instead of many times down the road.
Donโt get stuck on sunk costs. Do you plan to use your current blender until it dies no matter how long that takes? It’s the same with dead-end jobs or relationships. Would you buy your current situation today if given the choice? Overcoming sunk cost fallacy is one of the greatest life hacks. Related short video: Weโre gonna use it โtil it dies.
